RACE - Winter Short Track Series - Save the Dates!
2021 DATES
Jan 24, Jan 31, Feb 7, Feb 14, Feb 21
The short track provides a unique and fun style of racing to the greater Charlotte region - short-track mountain bike racing on a 1.2 mile trail with banked turns. It's a cross between a criterium, BMX, cyclo-cross and single-track, super fast and very spectator-friendly. Start 2 Finish and Anne Close Springs Greenway have worked hard to create a trail that's exciting for the race participants and spectators. Participants, based on category, will race 15 to 25 laps on the fast course. All of the events will be held at Anne Springs Close Greenway at the Field Trial Barn. We plan to have a food truck, an event photographer, and music at all of the events.
There will be safety measures in place for the 2021 series in an effort to limit contact and prevent the spread of the COVID virus among participants, spectators and those working the event. Please stay tune as we update the safety measures.
The series awards will be handed out after the last race in the series. It will take a little more time as each will need to be calculated. We will have a podium presentation for the top 5 overall in each category.
Series Registration is OPEN! Individual race registration will open in mid-January.
Races are held RAIN or SHINE!
We will once again have race primes for ALL categories from our presenting sponsors of each race in the series.
Team Competition
The Team competition will consist of team members across all categories earning points. The points will be derived from a new system called "Pack Points". Pack Points are based upon the number of people racing in your category, with a minimum of 10 points for the winner. The top six people from your team will be scored.
1st Place Team - $250 and Winners Trophy
2nd Place Team - $150
3rd Place Team - $100

RACE - USNWC Whole (or Half) Enchilada
Don’t think of it as a 30 mile bike race… think of it as a series of 3 TEN mile group rides on a race course! Our goal will be to participate / ride as a team (unless your rider is interested in being competitive - then, that’s great too! ALL Team CLTMTB riders are welcome to register and attend. Our only goal will be to finish the race in the allotted time. We can line up/start last, take breaks, eat and hang out along the way - and just have a fun day together riding in the woods. Parents who do not ride can rest assured that their young rider will never be alone on the race course and will be accompanied by competent staff and adults/parents to help them along the way. The only requirement is a desire to complete the race course within the allotted time constraint.

RACE - Stump Jump - Race #4 in the Cane Creek Cup Series
All Team CLTMTB Riders are welcome and encouraged to attend. Matilda and Coach Shawn will be there Saturday afternoon to pre-ride the race course and camp out Saturday night. Then, Sunday we will have a pit area set up - parents are welcome to hang out, bring your own chair, or head out into the woods to find a good spot to see their racer fly by! The Juniors categories all race ONE lap at this race and we are not familiar with the venue, so don’t know about good vantage points to see the action… so, we are just “winging it” at this race.
The Spartanburg Area Mountain Biking Association (SAMBA) is proud to present Race #3 of the USAC SC State Championship on June 28 at I.C. Croft State Park in Spartanburg, SC.

TEAM RIDE - Renaissance Short Track
This Saturday’s Team Ride, will meet again at the Renaissance Park Short Track. Coach Shawn can not attend this time since he will be at a NICA Coaches’ retreat all weekend - however, his trusted Assistant Coaches, Matilda, Quinn, Addison, Julia, and Paul will be there to help organize groups, stagger starts so everyone can get nicely spread out on the trail, and direct some .
ALL parents who ride are always welcome to ride along at Saturday rides. Also, the course at Renaissance Short Track is VERY spectator-friendly. So, if you do not ride, this is an awesome opportunity for you to find a spot in the woods to hand out, drink your coffee, and watch the action! Assistant Coaches can show you some prime spots for that.
The Reni Short Track is the perfect spot for us all to ride together, at our own pace, and have developing fundamentals. More advanced riders will be encouraged to group together with a parent to explore the full course on their own, at their own comfortable pace. This is done by taking a RIGHT at the first fork in the trail, where we usually go left. Less experienced riders will spend more time following Assistant Coaches to get feedback so you can work on perfecting those fundamentals and essential skills.
Everyone is welcome to arrive a little early - also, please try to have tire pressures set as we discussed at our first meeting. Ask your young rider to teach you what they learned. They should be placing both hands on top of the tire and pressing down, while looking at the bottom of the tire where it meets the ground. A mountain bike tire that is properly inflated for trail riding should flex/flatten out a bit at the bottom, allowing the knobbies on the sides of the tires to almost touch the ground without the sidewall of the tire wrinkling. wrinkles mean the tire is under-inflated / good squishy flex with side knobbies almost touching is the goal. I will start to keep track of this and will share information with all parents regarding each rider’s optimum baseline tire pressure. The best rule of thumb is to ride with the front a little bit (1-2 lbs) less pressure than the rear.
As always, feel free to call or text Coach Shawn with any questions.
TEAM RIDE - USNWC Lake Loop
This Saturday’s Team Ride will be at the US National Whitewater Center’s LAKE LOOP. This 2.6 mile loop is another great spot for riders of all ages and skill levels to get some great practice on the bike. Older, more experienced riders should be able to get in multiple laps of the full course, while younger/less-experienced riders may only complete 1 or 2 laps, while having plenty of time to break things down, session (attempt multiple times) different sections, and just once again have fun riding together in groups. All parents who ride are welcome to attend! Please plan to get there a little early so we can start rolling groups right around 9. We will meet in the parking lot near the Lake Loop trailhead. Please use the bathroom before you arrive - the trailhead is a good 100yards/+ from the nearest bathroom. We will bring plenty of water for everyone for refills at the trail head.
There’s SO much to do and see at The Whitewater Center, so parents are encouraged to stick around and check out the facility while we are riding if you don’t ride with us.

TEAM RIDE
This morning for our first Team Ride, we will all meet at the Renaissance Park Short Track. Looks for Coach Shawn’s Black F-150 and Orange PopUp tent. ALL parents who ride are welcome / encouraged to attend and bring your bike and helmet to ride along with us. We will split into as many groups as we can after a full-Lap tour to look at, discuss, strategize, and prepare for the 1-mile short track course. Throughout the course of the morning, I will be helping each rider to perfect their bike fit, making any adjustments necessary to seat height, placement of controls, etc.
